Tinea versicolor (TV) is a common skin disease caused by excessive growth of yeast on the skin. Yeast usually lives on everyone's skin, but becomes overgrown in some people, especially during the warm summer months. Yeast thrives on oily, moist skin, usually on the chest and back, but it sometimes grows on the face, neck and arms.
TV can be easily diagnosed by examining the skin, but sometimes your doctor will scratch your skin to look for yeast. When viewed through a microscope, the yeast forms lines and dots that look like spaghetti and meatballs.
