Going to the bar? According to a survey by Clemson University food scientists Paul Dawson and Wesam Al-Jeddawi, adding a slice of lemon or a few pieces of ice to your cocktail may not hurt your waistline, but it can seriously affect your health.

In a study published in The Conversation, Dawson and Al-Jeddawi found that ice and beverage accessories used in many eating establishments are not only dirty, but may be harmful to our health. That's because these items can carry dangerous bacteria and viruses. People are very ill due to poor food handling. The researchers conducted an experiment to determine if there was a hand contaminated with E. coli - you know, this nasty bacteria can make you sick due to diarrhea, vomiting and convulsions, in more serious The situation can lead to kidney failure or even death - possibly to lemon and ice. They found that if the lemon gets wet, E. coli will be "100%" transferred. terrible! The same is true for ice. If the lemon is dry, the bacteria is only transferred 30% of the time, which is still very disturbing.
This study, related to a 2007 study, found that nearly 70% of lemon slices were used to make beverages in 21 restaurants that produced microbial growth in a city in New Jersey.
Feeling uncomfortable?
According to the researchers, ice is more conducive to pollution than lemon. Dawson and Al-Jeddawi's research concluded that more bacteria were covered by bacteria and transferred to ice instead of lemon. Up to 67% of organisms are transferred from the red hands to the ice, and even more - 83% - from the ice shovel to the ice.
You might think: But what if I just grab my lemon slice? The cup of the bar? Not so fast.
Dawson and Al-Jeddawi put forward some good (but terrible) ideas that people who deal with citrus cut into small wedges may contaminate their hands. Cutting boards or knives may also be contaminated. Or the one who arrives at the lemon can before you can put them. They may have claws in the lemon slices and bacteria on the whole lemon slices. Then there is a fact that you don't know how long the lemon has been sitting there. The researchers found that E. coli reproduces at an alarming rate - more than five times in four to four hours.
If you want to know if alcohol will kill dangerous bacteria, it doesn't look good. Dawson and Al-Jeddawi provided the results of previous studies in which frozen pathogens were not killed, even when melting in 80 to 86 mixtures of Scottish and soda or tequila. However, bacteria that survive in pure scotch or tequila drinks are much less than bacteria that contain soda.
This study is worrying, this is a good reminder to make good choices about where you eat and drink. Most pollution cases are related to food service workers or those involved in food or beverage preparation. All of this means if you are drinking at the bar, pay attention to the hygiene level, if you are in a sporting event or barbecue, make sure that the unofficial bartender washes your hands and prioritizes cleaning.
[Or just save yourself pressure and stick to shooting. Cheers!
